💡 What does the ending really mean?

Derek Vinyard emerges from prison reborn, having survived rape and witnessed the hollow rot of his neo-Nazi crew. He frantically works to pull his younger brother Danny out of the same ideology, and for one fragile moment it seems possible. The climax detonates in the school bathroom: moments after Danny presents his anti-racist paper, a Black youth he had previously antagonized shoots him dead at point-blank range. The ending is mercilessly pessimistic. Individual redemption arrives too late; the hatred Derek once weaponized has already metastasized into the next generation, which now returns it with lethal interest. Racism is revealed not as a personal flaw but as a self-perpetuating generational curse that devours its own children, proving the abyss does not forgive or forget.
