Ending Explained: Chime
The Japanese Whisper No One Asked For (And Everyone Deserved to Ignore)
💡 What does the ending really mean?
The protagonist, a sound engineer fixated on an inaudible “chime,” slaughters his family in total silence while obsessively recording what he believes is a supernatural whisper. In the final scene he sits amid the blood-soaked house, looping the playback: only static, the white noise of his unraveling mind. Symbolically the ending is a merciless verdict on contemporary existence: the chime was never real, merely the last comforting delusion shielding a domesticated, alienated life from absolute meaninglessness. Kurosawa leaves us with a man who chooses recorded madness over the unbearable silence of the world, turning domestic horror into a nihilist elegy for the void we can no longer endure.
