Ending Explained: Coherence

💡 What does the ending really mean?

In the climax, as the comet's passage peaks and parallel realities bleed into one house, the dinner party devolves into paranoia and violence. Emily grabs a shovel and murders her alternate self from a more stable timeline, then assumes her identity, stealing the happier life, complete with photos and a new boyfriend. The film ends on her waking up the next morning in this borrowed existence, staring at a blackboard covered in frantic notes from the fractured night. Symbolically, it means coherence is an illusion: identity is fragile, happiness is relative and often stolen, and the self is just the version that survives by betraying every other possible you. The comet doesn't destroy the world; it exposes that we're all already fractured and replaceable.
