💡 What does the ending really mean?

The camera crashes into the basement for one unbroken shot as the possessed adoptive mother, eyes rolled back and skin like cracked leather, wrestles her two adopted sons to finish the colonial-era spirit’s soul-transfer ritual. The older brother stabs the ritual knife into her heart, but the entity leaps anyway; the little boy opens his eyes, flashes Sally Hawkins’ smile and whispers “I’m home now.” Symbolically the ending is vicious: there is no exorcism, only inverted colonization. Historical trauma doesn’t get expelled, it simply changes hosts, devouring the next generation. Australia swallows its adopted children; the house always wins. The guilt is never returned, only passed on.
