Ending Explained: The Executioner

Berlanga and the Black Comedy that Portrayed the Darkest Spain

Ending explained of The Executioner

💡 What does the ending really mean?

José Luis, the reluctant son-in-law of the aging executioner, ends up cranking the garrote vil himself, propelled less by intent than by the shoving crowd, fear of judgment, and the sheer inertia of the system. The camera pulls back as he stands alone, frozen in horror, now the official executioner. Symbolically, the ending is merciless: in Franco’s Spain—or any oppressive apparatus—nobody truly chooses to become the hangman; the machinery selects you through mediocrity, social pressure, and cowardly conformity. What begins as black comedy curdles into nausea, revealing how ordinary people are quietly transformed into instruments of the regime without ever noticing the exact moment they crossed the line.
