💡 What does the ending really mean?

The protagonist walks wordlessly for nearly 40 minutes across an endless desert in a single take, then stops at a blinding white horizon. He sits, removes his shoes, and methodically buries himself alive, grain by grain, until he vanishes beneath the sand. The camera holds statically on the empty dune for another 11 minutes as daylight dies. Symbolically, this is not suicide but the lucid, voluntary erasure of a self that had already ceased to exist in an emotionally barren universe. Hata frames self-burial as the only honest response to total affective desolation: when feeling has evaporated, the final coherent act is to eliminate the last trace that once remembered it.
