Ending Explained: Heretic
The Cat-and-Mouse Game That Doesn’t Realize It’s the Mouse
💡 What does the ending really mean?
In the climax, the two missionaries unravel Reed’s elaborate theological cat-and-mouse trap after enduring torture and staged revelations. One of them stabs him repeatedly, leaving him to bleed out on the floor. Reed dies smugly certain he has proven that faith collapses under genuine pressure, yet the surviving missionary, badly wounded, drags herself into the street and is rescued. Symbolically the ending is brutally clear: faith is not forged in safe doctrine but in the crucible of suffering. The mouse devours the cat. Reed’s nihilistic certainty dies with him as a false prophet, while the survivor’s battered choice to keep believing becomes the only victory that matters.
