💡 What does the ending really mean?

In the final stretch of *The Isle*, when Hyun-shik tries to leave, Hee-jin, the mute woman who runs the lake’s floating cabins, drives fishhooks into her own genitals and sinks into the water; he pulls her out and removes the hooks one by one. With the bodies she has been sinking about to surface, they flee together, towing the cabin with an outboard motor until they vanish into a reed bed, and Kim Ki-duk closes with a surreal shot in which those reeds seem to merge with her body. Symbolically, the ending is a pagan crucifixion and a carnal Eucharist: love is only possible through extreme suffering. The hook is not just an instrument of torture but a metaphor for the desire that tears and holds at the same time. For Kim Ki-duk, redemption runs through the shared wound, through a love that hurts more than death.
