💡 What does the ending really mean?

Woody and David reach Lincoln, learn the million-dollar prize is a worthless promotional scam, and drive home broke. In the final stretch, Woody reluctantly accepts the truck his son buys him and, for the first time, lets David drive while he sits silently in the passenger seat, stripped of all bravado. Payne’s ending is brutally clear: the fortune was the last pathetic illusion of a lifelong loser. The real “victory” is only a fleeting, awkward father-son truce that arrives far too late to matter. There is no redemption, no growth, no catharsis—just two broken men sharing one final, humiliating, and utterly transient moment of tenderness before the void swallows them again.
