Ending Explained: Parasite
The Sharpest, Most Darkly Humorous Dissection of Class Warfare
💡 What does the ending really mean?
The climax erupts in a birthday party bloodbath: Ki-woo strikes the rich father with a rock, the housekeeper’s husband rampages with a knife, and the son is fatally stabbed. Ki-taek, cornered and humiliated, slits the employer’s throat in a final eruption of pent-up rage before vanishing into the basement. The ending reveals Ki-woo’s naïve fantasy of buying the house to free his father is just another self-deluding scam; the poor remain literally and figuratively underground, while the rich simply move on. Bong’s savage final image mocks the illusion of social mobility: class warfare ends not in revolution but in permanent subterranean entrapment, with a bitter, mocking laugh at the audience’s own hope.
