Ending Explained: The Descent
When Hell Wears the Shape of a Cave (and a Trauma)
💡 What does the ending really mean?
The women, trapped in the pitch-black cave system, are systematically slaughtered by the blind, cannibalistic crawlers. Sarah, the protagonist unraveling from guilt over her family's death, discovers her friend Juno lied about the exit and abandoned her earlier. In the climax, Sarah slaughters Juno in a fit of rage, then hallucinates rescue while remaining sealed underground, surrounded by the monsters. The ending reveals Sarah never escaped: her 'rescue' is a trauma-induced delusion. Symbolically, the cave is her repressed grief, the crawlers manifestations of guilt and self-destruction. Hell isn't the monsters; it's the inescapable loop of her own psyche, where denial keeps her buried forever.
