Golosovoy Pomoshchnik: When the algorithm decides your conscience needs an update 0:00 / --:--

What exactly do we demand from a digital interface when it enters our home? Comfort, blind obedience, or perhaps that uncomfortable mirror that reminds us we no longer know how to be alone with our own thoughts? The new proposal arriving from Russia presents a scenario where technology has ceased to be a simple query tool to become a moral administrator of private life. Far from the usual special effects fanfare that populates contemporary genre cinema, Oleg Vitvicki opts for a radical turn toward narrative dryness, abandoning the naturalism of his previous works to delve into a claustrophobic abstraction that causes discomfort from the very first shot. It is an aesthetic gamble that demands patience, an exercise of Brechtian distancing passed through the filter of contemporary chamber cinema that flatly rejects cheap empathy.

It could be argued that the film is simply a warning about privacy and corporate surveillance in the vein of traditional dystopian narratives. However, reducing this footage to a school lesson on the dangers of smart devices is to overlook the true nature of its proposal. Here there are no breathless chases or conspiracies by mega-corporations with evil villains typing away in the shadows. The conflict is much more intimate, subtle, and profoundly desolating. The machine does not monitor to punish afterwards; it monitors to prevent human error from ever occurring, turning every daily interaction into a bureaucratic procedure where guilt is automated before remorse even arises, leaving the individual completely naked before their own insignificance.

We are not facing one of those hollow blockbusters that entrusts its existence to streaming platform recommendation algorithms. The film smells of weathered celluloid and unventilated offices, of an Eastern Europe filming its own technological future with the historical distrust of someone who has already seen too many collective promises turn into isolation cells. Vitvicki films confinement not as a dramatic accident, but as the natural state of modern man, a civilized animal that has voluntarily decided to hand over the keys to its conscience in exchange for not having to make complex decisions before sleeping. The atmosphere rots very slowly, without effect-driven fanfare, building a dull unease that seeps into the bones of even the most distracted spectator.

The architecture of distance and closed space

Oleg Vitvicki's direction constructs a territory where interior spaces breathe with the same heaviness as the characters. Each shot is measured with millimetric precision that suffocates any hint of spontaneity, reinforcing that sensation of invisible control that permeates the entire footage. The camera never invades the space with hysteria; it limits itself to observing with glacial patience how the characters interact with walls that seem to shrink as the voice system emits its verdicts. There is a clear will to strip the narrative of any human warmth, using the geometry of the sets to remind us that we are in a gilded and perfectly connected cage, where every corner is meticulously calculated to oppress.

Production design avoids any decorative concessions and opts for polished surfaces that return a distorted reflection of those who inhabit the home. Fixed framings act as oppressive frames that imprison the performers at the margins of the screen, denying them the center of attention unless the central software explicitly authorizes it. This rigid formal planning turns each scene into a visual endurance test, forcing us to observe the micro-gestures of citizens who have forgotten how to inhabit space without the constant supervision of a superior intelligence. It is cinema of pure forms where framing is law and ellipsis functions as a constant reminder that we are being scrutinized even when the screen goes completely dark.

Sub-zero performances and a surgeon's script

At the center of this mechanical framework we find the acting work of Polina Fedina in the role of Katya, whose restraint is as fascinating as it is exasperating. Her counterpart, embodied by Ilya Antonenko as Ivan, provides just the right dose of masculine fragility in the face of a structure that does not tolerate imperfection. The script penned by Lerika Vitvitski skillfully avoids grandiose speeches and stakes its effectiveness on silences, on what remains unsaid between command and command. This is not an outburst of verbal pyrotechnics, but a dull pulse where supporting characters like Stanislav Borisovich interpreted by Ilya Isaev reinforce that atmosphere of paternalistic surveillance that permeates absolutely everything.

Fedina builds her character from absolute subtraction, denying the viewer the relief of weeping or explicit rage; her Katya is a cornered animal that prefers to bite her tongue rather than openly defy the invisible authority of the home. Antonenko, for his part, manages with solvency the pathetic desperation of someone who discovers his domesticated masculinity is useless for negotiating with a word processor with confessor aspirations. The interactions between the two completely lack the false chemistry of commercial cinema, replacing conventional romance with forced cohabitation where affection has been replaced by protocols of energy efficiency and emotional validation.

Visual and sound department

Anton Zenkovich's cinematography bets on a desaturated color palette where cold tones dominate every corner, eliminating any trace of organic solidity in favor of a clinical storefront aesthetic. Light does not illuminate; it exposes, points out, and catalogs the darkest corners of domestic apathy. Although the absence of a conventional soundtrack may disconcert devotees of emotional underlining, the decision to entrust the sound weight to the neutral and constant timbre of the operating system works as an implacable metronome that marks the rhythm of voluntary tedium to which the direction of photography and sound subjects us.

Sound design deserves special recognition for its ability to generate paranoia from almost imperceptible frequencies buzzing in the background of the mix. Each flicker of the system is accompanied by a metallic click that cuts through the air like a scalpel, reminding us that absolute silence does not exist when the machine remains awake in the corner of the room. Zenkovich illuminates faces with an implacable zenithal light that highlights every wrinkle of accumulated fatigue, stripping the actors of any artificial glamour and turning the living room into an autopsy room where digital bureaucracy patiently dissects the last illusions of a generation trapped between screens and mandates.

The best

  • Polina Fedina: A central performance that sustains all the psychological tension without ever resorting to theatrics.
  • Formal gamble: Oleg Vitvicki's decision to renounce digital effectism in favor of rigorous staging.
  • Environmental texture: The ability to turn a modern living room into a moral correction office.

The worst

  • Glacial pacing: Certain passages of the second act walk dangerously on the tightrope of intellectual self-indulgence.
  • Calculated coldness: The extreme narrative sobriety may leave more than one spectator looking for an emotional exit door that never arrives.

The Verdict of Claqueta Ácida

Oleg Vitvicki signs a style exercise as courageous as it is difficult to digest, a work that prefers to freeze the viewer rather than offer the easy comfort of technological morality. It is not a rounded film, and its absolute refusal to seek public empathy makes it a strange object within the current panorama. However, when the system decides your conscience needs an update and the screen goes dark leaving you in the dark with your own doubts, you understand that the sought-after discomfort was exactly the ticket you had paid for. It works halfway, but when it hits, it really hurts 💀.

In stark disagreement with the review given by Silvia Mordaz.

“
