Azrael — Samara Weaving and the Hell of Silence
E.L. Katz and Simon Barrett deliver a brutal, relentless mute survival horror film where Samara Weaving once again proves why she is the modern scream queen.
Action and horror have always been close cousins in cinema, but in Azrael, directed by E.L. Katz (Cheap Thrills) and written by Simon Barrett (You're Next, The Guest), they merge into a single, breathless, and non-verbal chase. The film's hook is simple yet high-risk: in a post-apocalyptic forest world where humanity has voluntarily severed its vocal cords to avoid damnation, nobody speaks. There are no spoken lines, no inner monologues, and no subtitles—only panting, guttural growls, rustling leaves, and the brutal sound of flesh being torn apart.
The story follows Azrael (Samara Weaving), a young woman who has escaped from a fanatical cult. The cult's members inhabit the dense, freezing woods of Estonia and regularly sacrifice runaways to appease burnt, humanoid creatures that roam the wilderness. When Azrael is recaptured alongside her companion Kenan (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett), she refuses to be led quietly to the slaughter. What ensues is an intense 86-minute survival ordeal where Azrael uses sheer ingenuity, traps, and raw violence to fight her way through cultists and monsters alike.
Stripping a feature film of dialogue forces the narrative engine to rely entirely on visual clarity and sound design. Foley soundscapes turn every footstep, snapped twig, and labored breath into vital storytelling cues. The cinematography by Ramiro Belgardt captures the bleak, cold beauty of the Estonian forests, using pale daylight and flickering campfire shadows to create an atmosphere of primal dread.
At the center of it all is Samara Weaving, who solidifies her status as the defining scream queen of her generation. Having proved her comedic and horror range in Ready or Not, Mayhem, and Scream VI, Weaving here relies entirely on her expressive eyes, fierce physical stamina, and facial intensity. She delivers a performance of pure instinct and survival rage, carrying the film through its quietest moments and its goriest confrontations without ever needing a single line of dialogue.
While the narrative simplicity occasionally makes the middle section feel like a repetitive chase loop, Azrael excels as a lean, mean genre exercise. It embraces a grim, apocalyptic folklore that doesn't waste time with tedious exposition, letting the blood and atmosphere speak for themselves.
The Best
- Samara Weaving's powerhouse lead: She holds the screen with raw intensity and physical commitment without speaking a word.
- Immersive sound design: Foley, breathing, and forest acoustics take center stage to build relentless tension.
- Stunning forest cinematography: Pale Nordic light and damp landscapes enhance the primal, medieval atmosphere.
- Visceral practical gore: Brutal combat encounters that feel dirty, tactile, and uncompromising.
The Worst
- Minimalist mythology: The background of the cult and the nature of the monsters remain somewhat enigmatic and underdeveloped.
- Repetitive chase structure: The midsection relies on similar forest pursuit beats that can feel slightly formulaic.
The Verdict of Claqueta Ácida (6.8/10)
Azrael is a visceral, non-verbal thriller that strips horror down to its bare essentials: blood, sweat, and survival. Even if it occasionally stumbles due to its narrative simplicity, Samara Weaving's fierce performance and the film's relentless pacing make it a highly recommended trip into the silent woods.Ending Explained: Azrael

Tim Burton resurrects his most iconic creature, but the script is a Frankenstein’s monster of stale jokes and half-digested nostalgia. Keaton still rules, but this reeks of easy money.
