💡 What does the ending really mean?

In the climax of High Tension, Marie, revealed as the true killer, slaughters the entire family in a remote farmhouse while hallucinating a hulking male pursuer as her dissociated self. She then tracks and butchers her best friend Alex in a final, blood-soaked confrontation, only to be shot and institutionalized, still trapped in her violent delusion. The ending is a savage birth cry for New French Extremity: identity collapses into raw, sexualized meat, and the slasher becomes an oneiric poem of self-mutilation. Flesh is hacked into art; catharsis is impossible because the monster was never outside. It’s bleak, stylish nihilism dressed in arterial spray.
