Ending Explained: Azrael
Samara Weaving and the Hell of Silence
💡 What does the ending really mean?
Azrael, after surviving the mute cult and the forest monsters by burning her own throat so she cannot speak, returns to the cultist camp armed. In a bloody showdown, she kills the cult's leaders. It is revealed that the 'ancient evil' they tried to appease is a bloodthirsty demonic creature. In the end, Azrael gives birth to the baby she carried (or witnesses the symbolic birth of evil), and instead of fleeing, she assumes her role as the new leader or mother of this profane cult, merging with the beast. E.L. Katz ends the film suggesting that survival sometimes requires becoming the very thing that destroyed you.
