Ending Explained: Bone Tomahawk

💡 What does the ending really mean?

Four men reach the troglodyte valley. After an ambush, the cannibals kill two and capture the rest. In the climax, they strip the sheriff’s deputy naked, lash him to a post, hack off his leg, yank out the femur with meat still attached, and use the living bone as a tomahawk to smash his skull open in front of his companions. The ending means the total collapse of the civilized West: the white man’s own skeleton becomes the savages’ ritual weapon, erasing every line between civilization and barbarism. The Western genre is literally butchered, turned into meat and a tool for anthropophagy. Zahler offers no redemption, only carrion.
