Ending Explained: Bugonia

💡 What does the ending really mean?

In the final stretch of *Bugonia*, Michelle convinces Teddy she can take him to her emperor through a closet in her office at Auxolith. He goes in wearing explosives and dies in the blast. Then comes the twist: Michelle really is an Andromedan. Back on the mothership, she concludes that humanity is a failed, unsalvageable experiment and, with a tiny gesture, bursts the bubble that protects it: every human being on Earth dies instantly. Symbolically, Lanthimos turns Teddy’s paranoia into a prophecy fulfilled for the wrong reasons: he was right about the aliens and wrong about everything else. And the title closes in on itself: as in the myth of the bugonia, a new swarm is born from the carcass.
