Ending Explained: Dogtooth (2009)
The Instruction Manual for Turning Your Kids Into Lifetime-Guaranteed Automatons
💡 What does the ending really mean?
The climax erupts when the elder daughter, after a violent confrontation with her brother and a final act of rebellion, knocks out her own dogtooth with a dumbbell to fulfill the fabricated condition for leaving the family compound. She then hides in the trunk of her father's car and is driven away, presumably escaping into the outside world. The ending is a bleak, absurdist triumph of self-mutilation as the only viable key to freedom, symbolizing that the authoritarian conditioning of children into obedient, language-warped automatons can only be broken by extreme, irreversible violence against the self; liberation demands destroying the very body the parents claimed to own.
