Ending Explained: The Day of the Beast
When Hell Moved to Madrid (and Brought the Party)
💡 What does the ending really mean?
The climax unfolds on a Madrid rooftop on Christmas Eve 1995 as Father Ángel, José María, and Professor Cavan finally summon the Antichrist, who emerges as a grotesque, wailing infant. In a frenzy of black-metal euphoria and fireworks, the bloodied trio hurls the newborn off the building to its death among the city’s neon towers while a demonic carol blares. Symbolically, the ending is a savage, absolute blasphemy: Spain neither achieves redemption nor suffers damnation; it simply laughs, aborts the Devil on the holiest night, and keeps partying. Apocalypse is reduced to grotesque street fiesta. God and Satan prove equally pointless. All that remains is irreverent, joyful chaos. Madrid doesn’t burn; it gets drunk and dances on.
