Ending Explained: Disclosure Day
Spielberg’s Cardboard Apocalypse and the Alien Invasion Fairground Ride
💡 What does the ending really mean?
In the climax, the cardboard aliens reveal themselves as projections of Spielberg's own ego, descending to devour what remains of his directorial credibility. The repentant filmmaker protagonist sets fire to the polystyrene mothership while screaming “This isn’t cinema, it’s apocalyptic merchandising!” as everything erupts in cheap lights and motivational slogans. Symbolically, the ending is Spielberg’s creative suicide: the auteur publicly incinerates his own myth, admitting he has spent decades peddling the same recycled apocalypse made of nothing but cardboard. The final blaze does not purify; it only confirms that everything has been papier-mâché since Close Encounters.
