💡 What does the ending really mean?

Walt Kowalski steps out alone to confront the gang at their house, deliberately provoking them into shooting him in front of witnesses. He dies on the grass, arms spread like a crucified Christ, while the police finally arrest the gang members for good. The ending turns Walt into a deliberate martyr: his self-sacrifice redeems the neighborhood, breaks the cycle of violence, and passes true manhood to Thao. Symbolically, the old racist dies so a new multicultural community can live, with his beat-up Gran Torino becoming the ironic chariot carrying him into legend.
