💡 What does the ending really mean?

At the end of Hope, the protagonists continue their escape on foot toward Hope Harbor to alert the authorities after a second alien ship crashes. Meanwhile, the invaders consolidate their position on Earth and plan the resurrection of their offspring.

What happens at the end

The plot reaches its boiling point when local hunters discover a crashed spaceship in the forest, revealing that the creatures that have been slaughtering the villagers are, in fact, extraterrestrial beings. The ambush by Empress J'aur and her subordinates, Ma'veyyo and Ai'dovor, decimates the group of hunters, leaving Sung-ki as the sole survivor after an agonizing confrontation. The arrival of Bum-seok's team allows for a frantic escape down the road, where an exchange of gunfire with grenade launchers ends with Ma'veyyo wounded, but also with the apparent death of Sung-ki as he falls from the moving vehicle.

As the aliens regroup and plan the resurrection of their offspring, a second ship, belonging to Emperor Daiads, crashes into a nearby mountain. The resulting shockwave disables the protagonists' vehicle, forcing Bum-seok, Nak-yeon, Sung-ae, and Yang-bae to continue their escape on foot through hostile terrain. Their goal is to reach Hope Harbor to alert the authorities, while the invaders consolidate their position on Earth.

What it means

This film is an exercise in nihilism disguised as a big-budget science fiction production. The work does not seek narrative coherence, but rather the systematic demolition of the viewer's expectations. By revealing that the monster is an alien with an imperial hierarchy, the film abandons rural horror to embrace a cosmic chaos where human morality is irrelevant. The scene in which the protagonist hesitates to kill the creature upon seeing it cry, only for it to be run over by a truck shortly after, summarizes the mockery of cinematic sentimentality. It is a work that laughs at the idea of hope, suggesting that, in the face of superior forces, heroism is just another way to die in oblivion.

What is left open

The film leaves the final fate of most of the main characters up in the air, as they find themselves adrift in an environment dominated by alien forces. Although a post-credits scene confirms that Sung-ki has survived the accident on the road, it is not clarified whether the main group manages to reach Hope Harbor or if there is any real possibility of stopping the invasion. The threat of Empress J'aur and the possible resurrection of the alien offspring remain loose ends that suggest an imminent defeat for humanity.
