Ending Explained: Inexorable
The Literary Parasite and the Decaying Bourgeoisie’s Obsession
💡 What does the ending really mean?
In the climax, the fading novelist’s young daughter, possessed by the spirit of the parasitic drifter he has taken in, slits her mother’s throat and then her own father’s, completing the literary parasite’s total takeover of the bourgeois household. The drifter walks away untouched as the family estate burns. The ending symbolizes the inevitable, devouring rot at the heart of a self-mythologizing cultural elite: talentless, decadent, and obsessed with its own decaying narrative, it invites the very monster that will erase it. The bourgeoisie doesn’t fall to revolution; it is simply overwritten.
