Ending Explained: Irreversible
Hell in Reverse (Or How Gaspar Noé Forced Us to Choke on Our Own Cinephile Vomit)
💡 What does the ending really mean?
In the film's climax—which, due to its reverse chronology, is actually the opening sequence—Marcus and Pierre storm the gay club Rectum hunting for Alex's rapist. A drug-fueled, unhinged Marcus is savagely beaten and anally raped with a fire extinguisher by a stranger. In blind panic, Pierre bludgeons the attacker's head into red pulp with another extinguisher while the camera spins in an unrelenting, vomit-inducing long take. Symbolically, this 'beginning' exposes violence as a self-devouring engine: it breeds only more violence, annihilates both perpetrators and victims alike, and locks everyone into an irreversible spiral of human rot. Noé forces us to watch the exact moment hell is born so we understand it never ends; it simply rewinds to the instant everything turns to shit.
