Broken Domesticity, Discount Hitmen, and the Unfathomable Abyss of British Folk Horror

💡 What does the ending really mean?

In the climax, Jay, the debt-ridden ex-soldier turned hitman, completes his bloody assignment only to discover the cult has been orchestrating the entire kill list as a ritual to select their new leader. Dragged to a remote country house, he is forced into a brutal, masked duel with his best friend Gal; after slaying him, the cult crowns Jay as their chosen one while his wife and child are revealed as willing participants. The film ends on a frozen tableau of Jay’s masked face staring into the abyss. Symbolically, it reveals the abyss was never external but already nested inside ordinary British domesticity and masculinity: the violence Jay thought he controlled has consumed him, turning a broken family into the very pagan horror he was hired to exterminate. Wheatley’s nihilistic sting is that the cult wins by simply revealing what was always latent.
