Ending Explained: The Killing of a Sacred Deer

Quantum Greek Tragedy Served on a Sterile Hospital Platter

💡 What does the ending really mean?

In the climax, Steven is forced to choose which family member to kill to break the curse. After a botched attempt on his son, he executes his wife Anna in the kitchen while the children watch. The curse lifts; the surviving kids are later seen with Steven at a diner, where his daughter casually flirts with the now-blind boy whose father he once killed. Lanthimos ends on a sterile, ice-cold tableau of normalized horror: the sacred deer has been slaughtered, the cycle of mythic retribution is complete, and the family has been surgically reduced to a quantum of survivors. It is Greek tragedy stripped of catharsis, served as clinical proof that guilt, science, and bourgeois order are all equally impotent against arbitrary divine cruelty.
