Ending Explained: Le Corbeau (The Raven, 1943)
The Masterpiece That United Nazis and Communists in Hating Clouzot
💡 What does the ending really mean?
In the climax, the town’s poison-pen letters culminate in a public lynching: the innocent doctor Germain is nearly murdered by the hysterical mob until the real culprit, the seemingly virtuous Laura, is exposed and shoots herself. The final shots show the villagers silently dispersing in shame as the accusatory letters rain down like dead leaves. The ending is a merciless indictment of collective hypocrisy and the self-destructive poison of anonymous denunciation. Clouzot offers no redemption, only the bleak recognition that the true raven was never one person but the moral cowardice lurking inside an entire community.
