Ending Explained: The Coffee Table
The Ultimate Domestic Horror—Bought on Installment Plan
💡 What does the ending really mean?
Jesús, devoured by guilt and paranoia, finally bludgeons his wife María to death with a hammer. In an agonizing fixed shot, he then sits on the sofa beside her corpse while their baby wails off-screen, calmly waiting for the deliverymen to arrive and install the cheap coffee table he bought on installments. The film ends on the insistent doorbell ringing as he remains motionless next to the body. Symbolically, the ending is merciless: that ridiculous, installment-plan table becomes the ultimate emblem of how petty masculine vanity and mindless consumerist aspiration can annihilate an entire family. The true horror is not supernatural but the crushing banality of ego, mediocrity, and bourgeois stupidity. The film declares without mercy that when you prioritize a fucking coffee table above everything else, this is all that remains.
