💡 What does the ending really mean?

The survivors huddle in the church as the fog engulfs it and the leper ghosts slaughter everyone. Father Malone confronts Captain Blake, who spares him and returns the stolen golden cross; Malone realizes the town was founded on massacre and theft, and that the ghosts’ vengeance is righteous. At dawn the fog lifts, yet Malone, alone and seething, screams at the sky that the blood price is not enough. The ending is a nihilistic sneer at American atonement: the original sin of genocide and robbery can never be redeemed by repentance or sacrifice. The fog is not an external monster but history’s own guilty conscience, returning every century to collect an unpayable debt. Carpenter signs off with gothic irony and cosmic contempt—humans are merely meat for the mist.
