💡 What does the ending really mean?

Robert Thorn chases young Damien to a church altar and plunges the seven sacred daggers into the boy’s neck and chest while Damien screams “Daddy, please!” in a childish voice. Police burst in and gun Thorn down. The final shot reveals the dead ambassador, then cuts to the new American ambassador—played by the same actor who portrayed the President—taking the orphaned Damien into his care; the boy turns and smiles directly at the camera. Symbolically the ending is ice-cold and merciless: evil is not vanquished but officially embraced by the highest seat of power. The Antichrist is legitimized at the empire’s core, and Damien’s knowing smile tells us the Apocalypse has already begun—from within. The real horror is not the child; it is that the system itself chooses and shields him, and we, the audience, have welcomed it with open arms.
