Ending Explained: The Lobster
Marriage as the Concentration Camp of Loneliness
💡 What does the ending really mean?
In the climax, David and the short-sighted woman flee the hotel only to be captured by the woodland resistance, which demands they feign emotional numbness. Exposed, she is surgically blinded as punishment. Instead of revolt, David sits her in a restaurant, picks up scissors, and begins carving out his own left eye to match her blindness and remain 'paired' inside the system's rules. The screen cuts to black before the act completes. Symbolically it is total capitulation: love neither wins nor escapes, but willingly mutilates itself to fit the same bureaucratic horror it once opposed. The emotional lobster triumphs.
