Ending Explained: Manticore
Carlos Vermut and the Monstrosity Lurking inside the Mind
💡 What does the ending really mean?
Julián, unable to control his pedophilic impulses which he tried to sublimated by designing 3D monsters, breaks up with Diana after indirectly confessing his torment. The final shot displays Julián weeping inconsolably in front of his computer, embracing the virtual 3D avatar that embodies his unspeakable obsession. Symbolically, the film throws us into the abyss of a lifetime sentence: there is no redemption or cure for the monster inside him; only the mental prison of simulation. Carlos Vermut crafts a psychological horror masterpiece where the true terror is not a mythological beast, but the tragic self-awareness of a man who knows he is a danger to society.
