Ending Explained: Martyrs
The Unbearable Calvary of Transcendence
💡 What does the ending really mean?
In the climax, Anna is captured by the cult, chained, beaten, flayed alive, and reduced to a quivering mass of exposed flesh. Suspended in absolute agony, she finally crosses into a transcendent state, bathed in white light and serene peace, dying with a blissful smile. The ending brutally declares that mystical revelation and union with the divine are achievable only through total corporeal annihilation. Love, faith, or mercy offer nothing; only inhuman, prolonged torture purifies the self into transcendence. Laugier equates ecstatic vision with the absolute limit of horror, making Anna’s smiling, skinless face the ultimate image of flesh and spirit devouring each other in victorious mutual destruction.
