Ending Explained: Megalopolis
A Metallic Opera of Pretension and the Art of Monumental Mediocrity
💡 What does the ending really mean?
In the final stretch of *Megalopolis*, New Rome must choose between Clodio Pulcher's populism and the utopian city Cesar Catilina wants to build with Megalon. After the assassination attempt that nearly kills him and the fall of the Soviet satellite that destroys part of the city, Cesar's project prevails and Mayor Cicero ends up accepting the future his enemy represents, now partnered with his daughter Julia. Cesar's power to stop time stops being an escape and becomes a way of looking ahead: Coppola closes his fable with an almost liturgical reconciliation and a very personal idea, that art is only worth it if it is built for those who come after.
