Ending Explained: Megan Is Missing

A Chronicle of Cheap Horror

💡 What does the ending really mean?

At the end of Megan Is Missing, Josh locks Amy in a barrel next to Megan’s decomposing corpse and buries her alive in the woods. Finally, missing persons posters for both girls are shown, and the credits roll over a scene where they appear to be chatting carefree on a bed about their future.

What happens at the end

The climax is triggered when Amy, following the trail Megan left behind, heads to the old bridge and begins recording her video diary, clutching her teddy bear as a final charm. Suddenly, a man's hand grabs her and drags her off-screen. The camera she was carrying is thrown into a dumpster, where investigators later recover and play it back unedited, revealing the raw reality of the kidnapping: Josh opens the door to a torture chamber, where Amy is chained to the wall, forced to eat from a dog bowl without using her hands, and, after a brutal rape, is offered an impossible way out.

Josh tells Amy she will be released if she manages to climb into a huge plastic barrel, presumably to hide her body. When Amy opens the lid of the barrel, the horrifying sight of a decomposing corpse—Megan's body—paralyzes her. With no alternative, she pushes herself into the container next to the corpse, begging for her life as the man forces her inside. Then, in a nearby forest, Josh digs a hole, places the barrel inside, and covers it with dirt before walking away with a flashlight in hand, leaving Amy buried alive next to Megan's body.

The epilogue consists of a succession of "missing" posters with the faces of Megan and Amy as the music fades. The credits appear over an incongruous scene: the two girls are lying on Amy's bed, chatting carefree about their future, as if the tragedy had never occurred.

What it means

The final twist is not so much a "scare" as it is an exposition of the violence that the found footage format aims to simulate, which in this film becomes explicit and unfiltered. The barrel containing Amy and Megan's corpse functions as a metaphor for the digital void that swallowed them: a container of data and shared images that ends up trapping its creators in a nightmare with no way out. The absurd and out-of-place credits scene suggests that the director wants to highlight the disconnect between sensationalist storytelling and the reality of the victims, leaving the viewer with the feeling that the horror has been turned into a cheap spectacle.

What is left open

The film never clarifies Josh's fate after he buries the barrel; his face is never shown, and his exit under the light of a flashlight remains without legal or moral consequences. The credits sequence showing the girls alive can be interpreted as the director's attempt to emphasize the disconnect between sensationalist narrative and the reality of the victims, or as a continuity error that the production did not bother to correct.
