Ending Explained: Shrew's Nest
A Maze of Shadows That’ll Claustrophobically Haunt You
💡 What does the ending really mean?
Montse, unraveling after finding her mother's long-hidden corpse, accidentally kills the neighbor and then, in total psychotic collapse, repeatedly stabs her sister Elisa when she bursts in. The film ends with Montse cradling Elisa's bloody body as the camera slowly rises, turning the apartment into a frozen mausoleum. Symbolically, the shrew was never the mother or any outside threat; it was Montse all along, consumed by her own terrors until she became the monster she feared. The ascending shot offers no escape, only the icy realization that the labyrinth and the prisoner were the same person.
