Ending Explained: Oldboy
The Ritual of Revenge in Blood-Soaked Celluloid
💡 What does the ending really mean?
Oh Dae-su learns in the climax that the woman he has fallen in love with and slept with is his own daughter, conceived years earlier when he raped Lee Woo-jin's sister. Woo-jin reveals the full monstrous symmetry, then shoots himself; Dae-su collapses in horror, begging the hypnotist to erase his memory so he can live in blissful ignorance. The ending is a perfect, infernal trap: revenge achieves total victory yet solves nothing. Memory itself is the final prison; forgetting is the only mercy. Park Chan-wook closes the ritual with biblical nihilism, proving that the avenger merely breeds new monsters, and the last sound is a broken, despairing laugh at the edge of the abyss.
