Ending Explained: Pearl

💡 What does the ending really mean?

Pearl reaches her breaking point in a grotesque, blood-soaked climax where she murders her disapproving mother by smashing her head and then shoots her father in cold blood. She dances euphorically with the corpse of her lover in the barn, lost in a deranged Technicolor fantasy, before the police arrive to witness her smiling descent into total madness. The ending symbolizes the violent birth of the monstrous movie star Pearl will become: her innocence has curdled into psychopathic ambition, and the vibrant colors of Hollywood dreams bleed into the nightmare of her hollow, murderous soul.
