Dario Argento’s Technicolor Nightmare Ballet

💡 What does the ending really mean?

In the climax, the prima ballerina, possessed by the vengeful spirit of a murdered diva, unleashes a hallucinatory slaughter during the final performance of 'Macbeth,' turning the opera house into a crimson cathedral of impalements, razor-wire garrotes, and Technicolor arterial sprays while the orchestra plays on. The film ends with her triumphant yet catatonic bow as the curtain falls on a stage literally drowning in blood. Symbolically, Argento closes the nightmare by declaring that true artistic transcendence demands total annihilation of the self; the ballerina becomes both victim and monster, forever trapped in an eternal, beautiful, and utterly empty performance, where creation and destruction are revealed as the same bloody pirouette.
