Ending Explained: The Lighthouse
Monotony, Madness, and the Stench of Kerosene-Drenched Maritime Mythology
💡 What does the ending really mean?
In the climax, Ephraim Winslow (Pattinson) kills Thomas Wake (Dafoe) with an axe, drags the body away and, in a fit of triumph, climbs the tower, opens the lantern and is blinded by its light. Naked and convulsing, he tumbles down the stairs, and the final image finds him sprawled on the rocks by the sea while gulls peck at his guts. Symbolically, the ending reveals that Winslow was never a lighthouse keeper but a punished Prometheus: his obsession with the light (knowledge, power, absolute masculinity) destroys him. The lighthouse is not salvation but a devouring deity; the man who stares straight into it becomes carrion for the sea gods. Madness is not a metaphor here, it is a mythological sentence.
