Ending Explained: Jaws
The Film That Taught Us to Fear the Ocean (And Capitalism)
💡 What does the ending really mean?
The shark is finally blown to bloody chunks in the climax when Chief Brody shoves an oxygen tank into its mouth and fires a rifle shot, exploding it from the inside. Quint is devoured, Hooper survives hidden underwater, and the survivors paddle home in silence. Symbolically, the ending mocks capitalism's hubris: the greedy resort owners who ignored the shark for profit are exposed, while the working-class heroes triumph only through desperate, individual violence. The ocean remains unconquered, but the real monster was never the fish; it was the system that fed people to it for tourism dollars.
