Ending Explained: Good Boy
The Wolf in a Knitted Jumper
💡 What does the ending really mean?
In the final stretch of *Good Boy*, Tommy plans an escape with Rina, the housekeeper, who gets him the padlock combination. The attempt ends in a violent struggle, but Chris and Kathryn neither call the police nor take revenge: convinced Tommy has genuinely changed, they unlock his chain and let him go. Tommy returns to his old life and finds that neither his mother nor his old friends ever looked for him; everyone has moved on. Overwhelmed by the emptiness and chaos of that world, and marked by his time in the basement, he walks back of his own accord to Chris and Kathryn’s estate. Symbolically, the ending is deliberately ambiguous: it can be read as genuine redemption — the discipline gave him the stability he never had — or as a bitter satire about an older generation molding rebellious youth into docile subjects who no longer know how to live without their chain.
