Ending Explained: Inside
The Surgical Exorcism of Pain Under the Gallic Scalpel
💡 What does the ending really mean?
At the end of Inside, the woman kills the police officer and rescues the baby by cutting open Sarah's abdomen, who dies from her wounds. The attacker is left alone cradling the newborn while looking at the mother's corpse.
What happens at the end
Sarah corners the woman and burns half her face with a spray can and a cigarette. At that moment, the attacker reveals to her that she was driving the other vehicle in the car crash and lost her own child because of it. They are interrupted by a third police officer who, although previously shot, survives disoriented and blind. He mistakes Sarah for the intruder and brutally beats her in the abdomen with his nightstick, which causes her water to break. The woman goes to Sarah's aid and kills the officer with a shower curtain rod. The baby gets stuck as Sarah begins to give birth on the stairs. The woman cuts open Sarah's abdomen with scissors to rescue the infant. The baby is successfully born, but Sarah dies from her injuries. The woman sits in a chair to cradle the newborn, who lets out a brief cry while she looks at the mother's corpse.
What means
The film uses the bloodbath not as a mere macabre decoration, but as a brutal psychological and physical settling of accounts between two mothers marked by the same accident. The intruder is not a standard supernatural monster, but the personification of the most morbid and deranged grief, willing to usurp a life to fill the void of her own tragedy. The outcome underscores a cruel irony when the law, embodied in the blind policeman, destroys the real mother before the killer assumes her macabre maternal role.
