Ending Explained: Colony
Yeon Sang-ho's Worm or the Architecture of Asphyxiation
💡 What does the ending really mean?
At the end of the film, scientist Seo Young-chul, who triggered the outbreak to avenge Kwon Se-jeong for reporting his father, manages to control the horde of infected after allowing himself to be bitten by CEO Kang Woo-chul. After the death of most of the survivors, including Bong-seok, Hyun-hee, and Hyun-seok, Young-chul escapes the building and releases the infected into the city center. Se-jeong, following Gong Seol-hee's instructions, uses a jacket covered in mycelium to confuse the infected, causing a collapse in their collective intelligence. Amidst the chaos, Young-chul dies after being pushed into a burning car, which causes all the infected to freeze. However, the threat does not end, as it is revealed that one of the infected begins to move again.
What it means
The ending suggests that although the mastermind behind the outbreak has died and the infected's neural network has been deactivated, the pathogen remains active within the victims' bodies. The final scene implies that the infection does not rely exclusively on Young-chul's will, but possesses an autonomous survival capacity, leaving the door open to a possible resurgence of the outbreak in the future.
What is left open
The film concludes with uncertainty about whether the infection is truly reversible or if the infected have simply entered a state of latency. Additionally, it remains to be seen how Se-jeong and Seol-hee will explain the incident to the authorities and the public, and whether the government will be able to contain the infected who have been scattered across the city following the collapse of Young-chul's control system.
