Ending Explained: The Fly
Cronenberg and the Art of Turning Love into Pus
💡 What does the ending really mean?
At the end of The Fly, Seth is irreversibly fused with the machine and, in a flash of awareness, silently asks Veronica to end his suffering. Devastated, she shoots him with the shotgun and ends his life, falling to her knees in despair.
What happens at the end
The climax erupts when Seth, now turned into a grotesque creature, tries to force Veronica to fuse with him and their unborn child to create a single entity. During the struggle, Veronica accidentally tears off his jaw, triggering his final transformation into an insectoid-human creature as he sheds his rotting human skin. Amid the chaos, Stathis Borans bursts into the laboratory and shoots the telepod cables, allowing Veronica to escape the macabre union.
The equipment malfunction causes the telepod to activate just as Seth is crawling out, irreversibly fusing him with the door and the machine's components. The resulting creature manages to drag itself toward Veronica. In a final flash of human consciousness, Seth silently asks her to end his suffering by pointing his own head toward Stathis's shotgun, which she had picked up. Veronica, devastated, pulls the trigger and ends his life, falling to her knees in despair.
What it means
This film is not a simple science fiction story, but a brutal metaphor for physical decline and isolation. Cronenberg uses Brundle's metamorphosis to remind us that the flesh is a treacherous prison that, sooner or later, rebels against our will. The tragedy does not lie in the scientific error, but in the loss of identity and dignity in the face of inevitable decay.
It is an exercise in romantic nihilism where love does not save, but rather witnesses, powerlessly, the crumbling of what once was a man. The final scene, with Veronica broken before the remains of her lover, underlines the cruelty of an existence that forces us to watch as the thing we love becomes unrecognizable and monstrous. It is, in essence, an elegy on the fragility of the human being in the face of relentless biology.
