💡 What does the ending really mean?

At the end of Tesis, Ángela kills Bosco after freeing herself from her restraints and wounding him with a knife. The film concludes with her visiting Chema in the hospital while the television confirms that Bosco’s victims have been found.

What happens at the end

After escaping from Castro, who dies during a struggle with Chema, Ángela is forced to confront Bosco to protect her sister. The tension escalates until Ángela, believing she has found an ally in Chema, is horrified to discover a camera in his house containing recordings of her, confirming that he too has been watching her. Disconcerted, she goes to Bosco’s house, where the final climax takes place.

After overpowering Chema, Bosco attempts to carry out his torture plan against Ángela in the same garage where he filmed his crimes. However, she manages to break free, wounds her captor with a knife, and finally shoots him dead with his own weapon. The final scene shows Ángela visiting a recovering Chema in the hospital while, on the television, the discovery of Bosco’s victims is confirmed, making it clear that the horror has been exposed to the world.

What it means

Amenábar gives us an exercise in pure cynicism where the boundary between the observer and the monster blurs until it disappears. Ángela, who began by seeking an academic thesis on violence, ends up becoming the protagonist of her own snuff nightmare, proving that morbid curiosity is not a study, but a trap. The final revelation about Chema is the coup de grâce: the "good friend" is nothing more than another voyeur with a camera, reminding us that in this game, everyone is, to a greater or lesser extent, complicit in the obscene gaze.

It is a brilliant dissection of our own nature: the viewer, like the characters, cannot stop watching. The film not only criticizes the horror industry but also points a finger at us for enjoying the tension it builds. In the end, justice arrives through the media, turning Ángela’s trauma into just another news headline, a conclusion as cold as a video camera lens.

What is left open

Although the direct threat of Bosco has been eliminated and the snuff tape case has been brought to light, the film leaves a shadow of doubt regarding Chema's true nature. Even though he helped Ángela survive, the discovery that he was also filming her without her consent suggests that his obsession with violence did not end with the killer's death. The film ends without resolving whether Chema will be prosecuted for his actions or if his complicity in voyeurism will go unpunished, leaving the viewer with the unsettling feeling that the cycle of the violent gaze could continue.
