Jesse V. Johnson has built his career in B-level action cinema with a consistency that sets him apart from most: his films have rhythm, his fight sequences are legible, and his actors pull in the same direction. Danger in the Depths should be his most accessible work — it has Antonio Banderas, a Spanish-American co-production and Maxime Alexandre behind the camera.

It also has Anthony Steven Giordano’s script, which is where the film stops working.

The premise isn’t original, but it doesn’t have to be: a group of friends on a diving holiday in Spanish waters who become the target of criminals on the open sea. Maritime survival thrillers have produced excellent films. What Danger in the Depths needed was for someone to spend more than a weekend thinking about what the characters do when the threat appears. Nobody did.

The film starts with a real advantage: Maxime Alexandre’s cinematography. The turquoise water off the Spanish coast has a clarity that Alexandre draws out with a color sensitivity rare in this kind of production. The first twenty minutes are genuinely attractive. The problem is that what comes next doesn’t deserve that visual attention.

The group discovers the criminals. It’s the moment when the script has to prove it understands how fear works. What it delivers instead is a chain of reactions no real person would have: characters who freeze when they should run, who scream when they should keep quiet, who make decisions that only make sense if the script needs them in a certain place for the next scene.

Direction and mise-en-scène

Johnson knows what he’s doing with physical action. The swimming-under-pressure sequences, the cuts between surface and depth, the geometry of the boat as a chase space: in these moments the film works. Johnson has done this before and the experience shows.

The problem is the scenes between the action sequences. When the characters talk — which they do too much, and always about the same thing — the direction loses its purpose. The camera becomes observational in the worst sense: it records without building any tension, without establishing the geography of danger, without making the viewer understand who is where and why that matters.

María Vertiz’s score works overtime to create tension the script hasn’t built. It isn’t melodramatic by aesthetic choice, it’s melodramatic out of structural necessity: in the absence of a coherent narrative escalation, the music tries to do the job alone. Sometimes it briefly succeeds. Most of the time it doesn’t.

Performances and script

Antonio Banderas as Burns delivers exactly what the film needs him to: presence, voice, the certainty that this man has been in tight spots before. His Burns is the most believable character in the show, built from three traits — control, pragmatism, a past that’s never fully explained — that Banderas inhabits with craft.

Laura Marano as Tatiana has energy in the first twenty minutes, before the script turns her into the spokesperson for a series of predictable reactions. Christina Ochoa does what she can with a character who mainly exists to supply information. Mario Tardón and Ramiro Alonso are functional. Diego Llinás has one scene that almost works.

Giordano’s script is its own biggest obstacle. It isn’t bad in the technical sense — the three-act structure exists, the turning points happen where they should. It’s that it lacks specificity. The criminals have no motivation the film bothers to establish. The protagonists make the decisions the script needs them to make, not the ones the characters would make. The threat is generic and, therefore, never generates real fear.

The best

  • Maxime Alexandre’s cinematography: Genuinely beautiful. It gives the film a visual quality its script doesn’t deserve.
  • Antonio Banderas: The only element that survives more than twenty minutes of scrutiny. Burns is a real character in a cardboard movie.
  • The physical action sequences: Johnson knows how to direct them, and in those moments the film briefly becomes what it should be for its entire running time.

The worst

  • Anthony Steven Giordano’s script: Predictable to the point of paralysis. The characters make script decisions, not character decisions.
  • The antagonists: The criminals have no motivation, backstory or specificity. They’re a generic threat.
  • The gap between action and drama: When the film moves, it works. When it stops, it dies.
  • The score: Competent but emotionally overloaded to compensate for what the script doesn’t build.

The Claqueta Ácida Verdict 💀

Danger in the Depths is a film that has everything it needs to work — a competent director, a solid lead actor, first-rate cinematography — and a script that methodically wastes every one of those advantages. Maxime Alexandre’s turquoise water is the most honest image in the film: pretty on the surface, nothing underneath. 💀

“
