One Last Shot — The Elegy of the Fleeing Hero

Explosive action disguised as a thriller, but which actually laments the death of the Navy SEAL myth. Sarcastic, tired, but with flashes of truth.

One Last Shot: The Elegy of the Fleeing Hero 0:00 / --:--

The first question the film poses is simple: what happens when the hero who always saves the world decides he no longer wants to save anything? The answer, which unfolds between explosions and punches, is an elegy for the obsolescence of the Navy SEAL myth. James Nunn, known for his low-budget works, attempts to give One Last Shot a metaphysical weight rarely seen in British action cinema. The production by Signature Films, with a budget that is never mentioned, seems to have bet on the formula: muscles, explosions, and a plot that justifies the chaos.

Upon entering the theater, the sound of artillery cannons in the trailer already announced an intense sensory experience. The screen lit up with the silhouette of Jake Harris (Scott Adkins) parachuting down onto a clandestine base. The shot, though brief, was etched in memory: the hero moves in slow motion, the light of dawn reflects on his visor, and the background music – which has no credited composer but sounds like cheap synthesizer – marks the rhythm of a film that wants to be serious without knowing how. The production context does not help elevate the work.

James Nunn, who directed The Darkest Hour (2022) without much recognition, returns to the same unglamorous action aesthetic. His career has been a succession of deliveries that promise more than they deliver, and here is no exception. The visceral first impression is that of a thriller that runs out of breath trying to be a reflection on the fall of the individualist hero. The script by Jamie Russell attempts to justify the villain's motivation, the ex-partner Elliot Carter (Steven Cree). Instead of an ideological terrorist, Carter is a broken veteran who wants to destroy the US missile defense network as a symbolic act against the system that left him behind.

That premise could have been an opportunity to explore the gap between military glory and post-service disillusionment, but the text stays in exposition dialogues that sound like a recruitment manual. Every time Carter explains his plan, the pace becomes heavier, as if the film were trying to convince the audience that there is something deep beneath the surface of the shots.

Direction and Staging

Nunn relies on fight choreographies that remind one of martial arts training videos. The scene of the confrontation in the silo corridor, where Adkins and Kosugi exchange blows while the camera spins over their heads, is technically competent but lacking in narrative gear. The lighting is flat, with cold colors that pretend to give a military atmosphere, but the result is a palette that blends into the background of the screen. There are no moments of silence that allow for breathing; the film advances at the rhythm of an explosion metronome. However, there is one moment that stands out: when Jake Harris finds himself alone in the control room, looking at the panels of the missile defense network, the camera remains static for a few seconds. The sound fades and the music disappears. In that brief void, the film seems to recognize that the hero is about to lose his purpose. It is the only time the direction allows the protagonist's well-intentioned pose to be questioned without being interrupted by gunfire.

Performances and Script

Scott Adkins carries the physical load of the film. His punches are precise, his face shows the typical determination of an action hero, but the script does not provide him with nuances. When he says "I won't let them destroy what we defended," his voice sounds like an echo of hundreds of previous films. Steven Cree, as the resentful villain, attempts to inject a certain melancholy, but his monologues lack authenticity; his British accent sounds forced when he speaks of military betrayal. Hannah Ware, in the role of Elena Torres, is the only female figure who attempts to break the formula. Her character is an intelligence analyst who helps Harris decipher the silo code. Even so, her presence is reduced to moments of exposition and a brief kiss in the rain that adds nothing to the plot. Dolph Lundgren, as Admiral Mulholland, appears as a war veteran who only serves to issue orders in an authoritarian manner. As a whole, the cast acts as well-oiled gears, but without the necessary pressure to generate friction. The script, although it attempts to delve into the unfulfilled promise of the hero, stays on the surface. Carter's motivations are explained in a single scene that lasts three minutes, and the rest of the film is dedicated to chasing him through corridors and helicopters. The intention to criticize the Navy SEAL myth is diluted among the shots, and the message becomes as confusing as the GPS signal the villain tries to sabotage.

Technical Aspects

The cinematography, without a credited director of photography, feels generic. The action shots are composed of quick cuts seeking energy, but the lack of contrast and creative composition makes the film look like a montage of YouTube clips. The sound, without an official composer, resorts to explosion effects recycled from other Signature Films productions. The production design shows military facilities built in a British studio; the silo corridors are set pieces, with fluorescent lights that remind one of a warehouse. Despite these limitations, the editing manages to maintain a constant cadence. The editing does not allow the film to stagnate; each fight scene is cut before the audience can get bored. The music, although non-existent as authorship, uses licensed tracks that attempt to elevate the tension, but end up sounding like a cheap video game ad.

The best

  • Fight choreography: the confrontations between Adkins and Kosugi are fluid and demonstrate the protagonist's martial experience.
  • Moment of pause in the control room: the brief quietness allows the film to hint at its thematic intention.
  • Presence of Hannah Ware: brings a technical point of view that, although limited, breaks the male homogeneity.

The worst

  • Flat script: the explanatory dialogues are forced and reduce the credibility of the conflict.
  • Generic art direction: the military sets seem recycled and without detail.
  • Lack of thematic depth: the hero's elegy stays on the surface, becoming an excuse for more explosions.

The Verdict of Claqueta Ácida

One Last Shot attempts to be the elegy of the hero who is no longer useful, but gets lost among bullets and clichés. The intention is there, but the execution remains in the shadow of its own explosions. I applaud the ambition, but the result is a soulless action that only serves to remind us that the Navy SEAL myth no longer has a place on the screen. 💀
