Voices: The Deaf Echo of a Domestic Tragedy Disguised as a Commercial Jump Scare 0:00 / --:--

National genre cinema drags along a historical curse as heavy as any celluloid phantom: the pressing need to apologize for existing or, even worse, to imitate with a shoestring budget the mechanisms of imported overseas terror. When a proposal like Voces, directed with a steady pulse by Angel Gomez Hernandez, comes our way, the cynical viewer's automatic reflex consists of raising a shield against the accumulation of tropes regarding haunted houses, bargain-bin EVPs, and textbook jump scares. Yet, scratching the surface of this production reveals something thicker than a mere amusement park attraction. There is a covert will to speak of something else, to use domestic architecture not as the setting where absolute evil dwells, but as a sounding board for what the living refuse to speak out loud in the privacy of their bedrooms.

The premise kicks off with the classic manual of the married couple moving in to renovate a dilapidated mansion with their young son, played with notable conviction by young Lucas Blas. The move, conceived originally as a home-renovation project laden with bourgeois illusions, instantly turns into a descent into mutism and collective paranoia. Far from seeking originality at all costs in every plot twist, the script penned by Santiago Diaz Cortes unashamedly embraces the genre's most recognized tropes: long hallways that seem never to end, doors slamming shut with violence, and toys coming to life without warning. We are not facing a formal revolution that will rewrite the manuals of cinematic parapsychology, but rather a precision machine designed to test just how far the viewer will swallow the artifice if the atmosphere is reasonably well constructed.

What is fascinating about the proposal emerges when observing how the pain of absence and family grief reorganize the physical space of the house. The layout of the rooms, the calculated distance between the child's bedroom and that of his parents, and the constant use of walkie-talkies as a defective umbilical cord configure a communication system where sounds are no longer just external threats, but physical projections of a shattered psyche. Angel Gomez Hernandez's direction handles pacing with artisanal craft, avoiding an excess of digital pyrotechnics at key moments and relying on the physicality of the spaces to generate a very specific claustrophobia. It does not reinvent the wheel of supernatural horror, but it knows precisely which nut to tighten so that the machinery doesn't squeak too loudly before the public's eyes.

The best

The work behind the camera proves that tension can be sustained without constantly resorting to cheap sensationalism or gratuitous screaming. The staging relies on static wide shots inside spacious rooms so that the viewer's gaze actively searches for what they already know will appear in the background of the frame. The cinematography handled by Pablo Rosso accompanies this strategy with a desaturated color palette that turns the house into a diseased organism where sunlight never fully penetrates. There is an evident control over space that prevents the film from completely falling apart when the script begins to pile up the common places of contemporary studio horror cinema.

The worst

In the acting department, the dramatic weight rests squarely on the shoulders of Rodolfo Sancho and Belen Fabra, who embody the progressive collapse of a married couple trapped in the worst possible nightmare. Rodolfo Sancho transitions from initial skepticism to absolute despair with a restraint that avoids cheap histrionics, while Belen Fabra brings a cutting vulnerability during moments of peak emotional tension. The chemistry between them works precisely because they are not presented as intrepid action heroes, but as an ordinary, flawed couple utterly unequipped to manage the void left by tragedy. The appearances of Ramon Barea and Ana Fernandez in the central stretch provide an old-school parapsychology counterpoint that balances the overall tone of the feature.

The Verdict of Claqueta Ácida

  • Direction of actors: The chemistry and naturalness with which Rodolfo Sancho and Belen Fabra sustain the family drama before horror breaks loose.
  • Acoustic atmosphere: The treatment of everyday sounds and interference as elements that generate genuine discomfort.
  • Technical solidity: The craftsmanship demonstrated by Pablo Rosso in cinematography to maintain tension without abusing unnecessary artifice.

The best

  • Excess of common places: The script resorts far too often to the stalest clichés of haunted house cinema.
  • Final technological deployment: The subplot involving measuring devices and monitors robs the main dramatic conflict of a certain intimacy.
  • Predictability: The development of events is guessed all too easily from the first act.

The worst

Voces remains halfway between dramatic ambition regarding grief and a fast-consumption commercial product. It does not reinvent the EVP genre nor will it enter the cult manuals of production company Kowalski Films, but it possesses enough honesty not to insult the viewer's intelligence in a lineup saturated with harmless mediocrity. Solid entertainment that is listened to with care before fading away into memory 💀

“
