Contemporary cinema insists on reducing domestic tragedy to a catalog of digestible psychological traumas for distracted audiences. We are demanded to empathize with a deathbed with the exact same laziness with which one consumes a fast-food meal on a rainy afternoon. However, in his directorial debut, Benjamin Finkel opts for a much more perverse path entirely devoid of human warmth. He places us in the summer of 2002 to witness the decomposition of a nuclear family under the weight of a prolonged and gray illness. Rather than surrendering to the tear-jerking melodrama one might expect from a Fifth Season and 51 Entertainment production, the staging prefers clinical distance and administrative silence. It is a script decision that does not seek to move, but rather to make the viewer uncomfortable with the coldness of a poorly filled-out form.

The premise revolves around little Johanna, played with magnetic coldness by Cameron Dawson Gray, who decides to take matters into her own hands in the face of her father's deterioration. The script, penned by the director himself, establishes rules of the game where childish innocence intersects with an almost bureaucratic logic. When attempting to invoke a benevolent entity to reverse the paternal destiny, the protagonist commits a procedural error that completely alters the nature of the pact. We are not facing a traditional demonic possession, but rather the wrong answer to a poorly drafted request. This reading demystifies any attempt at a purely therapeutic interpretation of the film, turning horror into a celestial logistics problem.

Ruth Wilson's presence as Naomi and Ben Chaplin in the role of Harry reinforce that feeling of bourgeois isolation where emotions have completely atrophied. Both actors navigate the 95 minutes of runtime with the rigidity of someone who has forgotten how to inhabit a shared home. The cinematography by Elisha Christian accentuates this atmosphere through a desaturated color palette that recalls the worst days of a government office in August. Every shot seems designed to remind us that tragedy, when routine, loses all its epic grandeur and becomes an unbearable trámite. The light does not enter the house; it filters through opaque curtains, as if the outside world were a foreign and hostile place.

The best

  • The conceptual approach: framing supernatural horror as a bureaucratic mistake from the afterlife.
  • Cameron Dawson Gray's performance: brings an unsettling rigidity that demolishes any temptation of easy tenderness.
  • Elisha Christian's cinematography: transforms the heat of the summer of 2002 into a gray office lighting condemnation.
  • The general pacing: the insistence on maintaining a monotonous tone may exhaust the patience of the less disciplined viewer.
  • The conclusion: opts for a cold ellipsis instead of offering a morally satisfying resolution.

The worst

  • The emotional restraint: some viewers might mistake the glacial detachment for mere narrative apathy.
  • The supporting roles: occasionally reduced to mere office furniture moving through the halls.

The Verdict of Claqueta Ácida

Benjamin Finkel has crafted a debut as uncomfortable as it is intellectually stimulating, preferring administrative irony to splatter-house cheap effects. It is not the masterpiece that will redeem modern fantastic cinema, but it is a reminder that sometimes hell is not other people, but the celestial customer service department. A piece of cynical goldsmithing that deserves to be viewed with the exact same distance with which one signs an insurance contract. 💀

The rebuttal from Dante Sangre (Blockbuster Scalpel)

In stark disagreement with the review given by Odin Lagbert.

“

Family: un cadáver corporativo estropeado. Yo vi la trama como basura industrial. La dirección vende una lobotomía estética. El ritmo arrastra como plástico pegajoso. El guion promete horror interno. En vez, entrega un trámite burocrático. La niña actúa como operadora fría. Cada escena huele a lavado de cara. La supuesta tensión se disuelve. Los diálogos son formularios sin alma. La cámara observa como auditor impasible. No hay sangre, solo polvo gris. El presupuesto parece una estafa. Podrían haber usado efectos de los noventa. En su lugar, optan por sombras vacías. El resultado es un engendro sin sustancia. Yo califico con cuatro punto tres. La película es un intento fallido. No logra ni horror ni drama. Simplemente arruina la memoria familiar.
